3 of them are in favor of the Lakers to win and also the other 2 predict that this Knicks would prevail. Assuming that they wagered $10 each, the pot would then end up $50. If the Lakers won, the pot would be equally divided to the 3 individuals, thus $50?? 3 = $16. 67, some sort of $6. 67 profit from the original $10 bet. On the other hand, if the Knicks won, the pot would be divided to your 2 Knicks supporters, consequently $50?? 2 = $25, a $15 profit from their original $10 can guess. In both cases, the losing individuals would just lose the amount of money initially wagered. Within spread betting, it is not really enough that you predict that a team would win and lose, but also accurately ascertain the disparity or “spread” between the points. The spread is normally based on a quote contingent on a particular sports book or bookmaker. Let us take the following for instance: Sport: Hockey Premier League Quote: 90-93 itemsMatch: Man U vs. Chelsea Bet: $10 for each point Market: Count of free kicks The quote identifies the “spread” or figure predicted with the bookmaker to be the total number of free kicks that is generated by the two teams in the game. The “buy” point refers to the higher number, 93 in such a case, and the “sell” point identifies the lower number, 90 from this example. “BUY” means you predict that free kicks would be more than 93 points. – Final score is 98 points, 5 points HIGHER as compared to your buying point. Ones prediction was RIGHT. 5 pts back button $10 = $50 GAIN Final score is 83 points, 7 points Lower than your buying point. Your prediction was WRONG. 7 pts back button $10 = $70 DEPRIVATION SELL” means you predict as few as 90 points of entire free kicks. -Final get is 98 points, 8 points Above your selling point. Providers gives you quote, which is consisting of bid (selling) price tag and – slightly higher – offer (investing in) price. Advantages with Betting Over Financial Market Trading There are plenty of excellent reasons why spread betting is becoming so popular and why a great number of people are turning their backs on market dealing. I will talk about each one of these in turn: 1. Tax free profits. Because spread betting is, well, betting, if you reside in the uk and win any money, you will be exempt from coughing up any tax. This differs greatly to market trading where any gains which might be made are subject to help capital gains tax. But how are you currently affected when it falls? With Spread Betting, you have the potential to profit from both rising and dropping markets, allowing you to operate as a Bull or maybe a Bear. .The following is some sort of jargon buster for 10 spread betting terms. Pip, tick or point In spread betting language this is the ’spread’ and the reason spread betting is referred to as spread betting. The spread betting provider gives the trader an upper and lower price prediction. Here is an example. If the FTSE 100 is usually trading at 6000 points in the close of the trading day. The spread betting provider provides spread of 6005 – 6006 points influenced by a prediction of where it thinks this market will open.

Excerpt: The Djima Rice Exchange (, Djima kome ichiba, , Djima kome kaisho), located in Osaka, was the center of Japan’s system of rice brokers, which developed independently and privately in the Edo period and would be seen as the forerunners to a modern banking system. It was first established in 1697, officially sanctioned, sponsored and organized by the shogunate in 1773, reorganized in 1868, and dissolved entirely in 1939, being absorbed into the Government Rice Agency (). The Japanese economy grew rapidly throughout the 17th century, culminating in the period known as Genroku (16881704) during which merchants prospered like never before. It was at this time that rice brokers and moneychangers (, rygaesh) gathered their shops and warehouses in the Djima area; the Rice Exchange can be said to have been established in 1697, the year it received a license from the shogunate. Since members of the samurai class, including daimyo (feudal lords) were paid in rice, not cash, the rice brokers and moneychangers played a crucial, and incredibly profitable, role in the emerging early modern economy of Japan. Over the course of the Edo period, the entire economy would not only shift from rice to coin, but would also see the introduction and spread of paper money initiated and facilitated by the men of Djima. The year 1710 marks the beginning of this development, which also brought with it the emergence of the concept of trading in futures (nobemai). The Osaka merchants, like the Kyoto rice brokers three hundred years before, developed an increasingly monopolistic grasp on the rice trade, determining prices not only within Osaka, but in the entire Kinai (Home Provinces) area, and indirectly having a great effect on prices in Edo. These economic developments a… More: |

An Age of Voyages, 1350-1600 $33.79 Cultural life flowered from the mid-fifteenth century in the Italian city-states, many of which profited from the new trading opportunities that growing world networks permitted. Contact among regions of the world expanded, bringing new ideas and prompting an appreciation of arts and letters-not only of the present but of the past. In Italy this cultural flowering was known at first as the renaissance of arts and letters, soon shortened to just Renaissance to accommodate cultural ingredients that came from beyond Europe. Italian and northern European cultural expansion benefited from similar retrieval of ancient knowledge in the Islamic world and East Asia. Like the Italians, the Chinese had grown even wealthier from the extensive links to global commerce provided by the Mongol Empire, but once thrown off, their cultural life flourished under the Ming. Cultural knowledge and the arts spread across Asia and into Europe. As part of state-building, the Ming nourished commerce but also rejected the cosmopolitan Buddhist legacy that arrived from central and south Asia. To strengthen dynastic Chinese rule, the Ming challenged Buddhism with a revival of age-old concern for the Confucian values that had languished under the Mongols. Foremost among these new Confucians was Wu Yube, so expert in his teachings that he attracted a wide coterie of disciples. In India, Nanak, an educated employee of an Afghan prince, sparked the founding of Sikhism. A similar search for reviving fundamental religious values occurred in Europe, where Martin Luther challenged the practices of the Catholic church, ushering in Protestantism. Religious reform and resistance to it were closely connected to thestate-building efforts of enterprising monarchs such as Henry VIII of England. India likewise experienced a fervent movement to revive pure, ancient religious practices. Fourteenth and fifteenth century global trade and long-distance ventures such as those made by the Ming and then by the Portug |

Efficient resource allocation schemes for search. $49.99 This thesis concerns the problem of efficient resource allocation under constraints. In many applications a finite budget is used and allocating it efficiently can improve performance. In the context of medical imaging the constraint is exposure to ionizing radiation, e.g., computed tomography (CT). In radar and target tracking time spent searching a particular region before pointing the radar to another location or transmitted energy level may be limited. In airport security screening the constraint is screeners’ time. This work addresses both static and dynamic resource allocation policies where the question is: How a budget should be allocated to maximize a certain performance criterion.;In addition, many of the above examples correspond to a needle-in-a-haystack scenario. The goal is to find a small number of details, namely ‘targets’, spread out in a far greater domain. The set of ‘targets’ is named a region of interest (ROI). For example, in airport security screening perhaps one in a hundred travelers carry a prohibited item and maybe one in several millions is a terrorist or a real threat. Nevertheless, in most aforementioned applications the common resource allocation policy is exhaustive: all possible locations are searched with equal effort allocation to spread sensitivity.;A novel framework to deal with the problem of efficient resource allocation is introduced. The framework consists of a cost function trading the proportion of efforts allocated to the ROI and to its complement. Optimal resource allocation policies minimizing the cost are derived. These policies result in superior estimation and detection performance compared to an exhaustive resource allocation policy. Moreover, minimizing the cost has a strong connection to minimizing both probability of error and the Cramer-Rao bound on estimation mean square error. Furthermore, it is shown that the allocation policies asymptotically converge to the omniscient allocation policy that knows the |

Financial Market: Trading Room $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: A trading-room gathers traders operating on financial markets. RVS Trading-roomThe trading-room is also often called the front office. The terms dealing-room and trading-floor are also used, the latter being inspired from that of a open outcry stock exchange. As open outcry is gradually replaced by electronic trading, the trading-room gets the only living place that is emblematic of the financial market. It is also the likeliest place within the financial institution where the most recent technologies are implemented before being disseminated in its other businesses. Before the sixties or seventies, the banks capital market businesses were mostly split in as many departments, sometimes scattered in several sites, as market segments : money market (domestic and currencies), foreign exchange, long-term financing, exchange, bond market… By gathering these teams to a single site, banks want to ease : Trading-rooms first appear among US bulge bracket brokers, such as Morgan Stanley, from 1971, with the creation of NASDAQ, which requires an equity trading desk on their premises, and the growth of the secondary market of federal debt products, which requires a bond trading desk. The spread of trading-rooms in Europe, between 1982 and 1987, is subsequently fostered by two reforms of the financial markets organisation, that are carried out roughly simultaneously in Britain and France. In Britain, the Big bang on the London Stock Exchange, removes the distinction between brokers and jobbers, and prompts US investment banks, hitherto deprived of access to the LSE, to set up a trading-room in the City. In France, the deregulation of capital markets, carried out by Pierre Bérégovoy, Economics and Finance Minister, between 1984 and 1986, leads to the cr… |

Frontier Swashbuckler $42.2 Few frontiersmen in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century epitomized the reckless energies of the West and the lust for adventure like John Smith T — pioneer, gunfighter, entrepreneur, militia colonel, miner, judge, and folk hero. In this fascinating biography, Dick Steward traces the colorful Smith T’s life from his early days in Virginia through his young adulthood. He then describes Smith T’s remarkable career in the wilds of Missouri and his armed raids to gain land from Indians, Spaniards, and others.Born into the fifth generation of Virginia gentry, young Smith first made his name on the Tennessee frontier. It was there that he added the T to his name to distinguish his land titles and other enterprises from those of the hosts of other John Smiths. By the late 1790s he owned or laid claim to more than a quarter million acres in Tennessee and northern Alabama. In 1797, Smith T moved to Missouri, then a Spanish territory, and sought to gain control of its lead-mining district by displacing the most powerful American in the region, Moses Austin. He acquired such public positions as judge of the court of common pleas, commissioner of weights and levies, and lieutenant colonel of the militia, which enabled him to mount a spirited assault on Austin’s virtual monopoly of the lead mines. Although neither side emerged a winner from that ten-year-old conflict, it was during that period that i Smith T’s fame as a gunfighter and duelist spread across the West. Known as the most dangerous man in Missouri, he was said to have killed fourteen men in duels.Smith T was also recognized by many for his good works. Excerpt: Online gambling is a general term for gambling using the Internet. Online poker tables commonly offer Texas hold ‘em, Omaha, Seven-card stud, razz, HORSE and other game types in both tournament and ring game structures. Players play against each other rather than the “house”, with the card room making its money through “rake” and through tournament fees. There are a large number of online casinos, in which people can play casino games such as roulette, blackjack, pachinko, baccarat and many others. These games are played against the “house”, which makes money due to the fact that the odds are in its favor. Bookmakers, spread betting firms and betting exchanges offer a variety of ways to wager over the Internet on the results of sporting events, the most popular being fixed-odds gambling. There are a number of online bingo rooms offering games on the Internet. Most lotteries are run by governments and are heavily protected from competition due to their ability to generate large taxable cash-flows. The first online lotteries were run by private individuals or companies and licensed to operate by smaller countries. Most private online lotteries have stopped trading as governments have passed new laws giving themselves and their own lotteries greater protection. Government controlled lotteries now offer their games online. Developments in the use of wireless, mobile devices to gamble follow in the wake of mainstream online gambling. Migration and Ethnicity in Chinese History: Hakkas, Pengmin, and Their Neighbors $53.36 This book analyzes the emergence of ethnic consciousness among Hakka-speaking people in late imperial China in the context of their migrations m search of economic opportunities. It poses three central questions: What determined the temporal and geographic pattern of Hakka and Pengmin (a largely Hakka-speaking people) migration in this era? In what circumstances and over what issues did ethnic conflict emerge? How did the Chinese state react to the phenomena of migration and ethnic conflict? To answer these questions, a model is developed that brings together three ideas and types of data: the analytical concept of ethnicity; the history of internal migration in China; and the regional systems methodology of G. William Skinner, which has been both a breakthrough in the study of Chinese society and an approach of broad social-scientific application. Professor Skinner has also prepared eleven maps for the book, as well as the Introduction. The book is in two parts. Part I describes the spread of the Hakka throughout the Lingnan, and to a lesser extent the Southeast Coast, macroregions. It argues that this migration occurred because of upswings in the macroregional economies in the sixteenth century and in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. As long as economic opportunities were expanding, ethnic antagonisms were held in check. When, however, the macroregional economies declined, in the mid-seventeenth and late eighteenth centuries, ethnic tensions came to the fore, notably in the Hakka-Punti War of the mid-nineteenth century.Part II broadens the analysis to take into account other Hakka-speaking people, notably the Pengmin, or shack people . When new economicopportunities opened up, the Pengmin moved to the peripheries of most of the macroregions along the Yangzi valley, particularly to the highland areas close to major trading centers. As with the Hakka, ethnic antagonisms, albeit differently expressed, emerged as a result of a declining eco |

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Hanseatic League (also known as the Hanse or Hansa) was an economic alliance of trading cities and their guilds that established and maintained a trade monopoly along the coast of Northern Europe. It stretched from the Baltic to the North Sea and inland, during the Late Middle Ages and early modern period (c.13th-17th centuries). The Hanseatic cities had their own law system and furnished their own protection and mutual aid, thus having a sort of a political autonomy and in some cases creating political entities of their own. Historians generally trace the origins of the League to the rebuilding of the North German town of Lübeck in 1159 by Duke Henry the Lion of Saxony, after Henry had captured the area from Count Adolf II of Holstein. Exploratory trading adventures, raids and piracy had happened earlier throughout the Baltic (see Vikings)-the sailors of Gotland sailed up rivers as far away as Novgorod, for example-but the scale of international trade economy in the Baltic area remained insignificant before the growth of the Hanseatic League. German cities achieved domination of trade in the Baltic with striking speed over the next (i.e. 13th) century, and Lübeck became a central node in all the seaborne trade that linked the areas around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The 15th century saw the climax of Lübeck’s hegemony. Hanseatic League’s foundation in Hamburg, Germany (circa 1241)Lübeck became a base for merchants from Saxony and Westphalia to spread east and north. Well before the term Hanse appeared in a document (1267), merchants in a given city |

Pairs Trade $44.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The pairs trade or pair trading, also known as market neutral, was developed in the late 1980s by quantitative analysts and pioneered by Gerald Bamberger while at Morgan Stanley. With the help of others at Morgan Stanley at the time, including Nunzio Tartaglia, Bamberger found that certain securities, often competitors in the same sector, were correlated in their day-to-day price movements. When the correlation broke down, i.e. one stock traded up while the other traded down, they would sell the outperforming stock and buy the underperforming one, betting that the “spread” between the two would eventually converge. A notable pair trader was hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management. |

Excavation at Al-Khore in the North-east of Qatar, Bir Zekrit and Ras Abaruk, and the discovery there of pottery, flint, flint-scraper tools, and painted ceramic vessels there indicates Qatars connection with the Al-Ubaid civilization which flourished in the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates during the period of 5th 4th millennium BC.

The Econometrics of Sequential Trade Models: Theory and Applications Using High Frequency Data $99 The book inquires the consequences of speculative trading based on private information about financial asset markets. It presents an extensive and thorough discussion of theoretical and empirical methods used in previous studies on sequential trade models. The text also introduces a new framework for estimation and hypothesis testing that extends earlier work in the field substantially. Several market microstructure models in the spirit of Easley, Kiefer, O’Hara and Paperman (Journal of Finance, 1996) are reviewed. The common theme of these papers is the focus on the consequences of information based trading on the price setting behaviour of the market maker. Assuming that some traders have private information about a security’s true value, a number of relations between observable quantities like the spread, the volume, timing of trades and volatility of asset prices can be established. The authors introduce a number of improved methods for estimation and hypothesis testing for sequential trade models and apply this econometric framework employing a high frequency transaction data set for a number of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange during August 1996. All results that are necessary for understanding the empirical framework introduced are derived step-by-step. The text is ideally suited as a reference work on old and new results as well as a textbook for graduate courses on Market Microstructure Theory, Empirical Methods in Finance or Econometrics. |

The History and Conservation of Zanzibar Stone Town $36.95 Zanzibar Stone Town presents the problems of conservation in its most acute forms. Should it be fossilised for the tourists? Or should it grow for the benefit of the inhabitants? Can ways be found to accommodate conflicting social and economic pressures? For its size Zanzibar, like Venice, occupies a remarkably large romantic space in world imagination. Swahili civilisation on these spice islands goes back to the earliest centuries of the Islamic era. Up until the nineteenth century it was the capital of a trading empire which spread Kiswahili and Islam over a large part of eastern and central African and the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar then suffered the loss of its empire to the Germans and the British. In the last thirty years it has passed through its second period of crisis. After the Revolution of 1964 the new rural owners did not have the wherewithal to maintain the old stone houses. The Stone Town seemed to be on the verge of extinction. In the 1980s the government reversed its policies and the old town became threatened by rapid redevelopment which disfigures as it builds. The Old Stone Town now stands in danger of being drastically transformed by tourism and trade liberalisation. |

The Indian Ocean in World History $120 Throughout history, dominance of the Indian Ocean has been a critical factor in defining a nation’’s supremacy and power. It is well known that it played a major part in the success of the Portugese nation at the start of the sixteenth century. In this concise survey, Milo Kearney shows how the trading and imperial expansion offered by the Indian Ocean were exploited by many leading powers from the third millennium BC to the very recent past. The nations included range from the ancient Egyptians of the new Kingdom to the Han Chinese and, later, from the Moghul to the British Empire. Milo Kearney goes on to show what a critical territory the Indian Ocean was during the Cold War because of its rich supply for oil. The history of the Indian Ocean provides a snapshot of many of the key issues in world history, such as colonialism, trade and spread of cultures and religions. It is important reading for all students of world history. |

The Language of Science: From the Vernacular to the Technical $28 Where do scientific terms come from? Why are they so similar in so many languages? How was the new nomenclature spread across the world? The Language of Science analyses the development of scientific vocabulary from its basic origins in everyday agricultural work, through to the need for a measurement system when it came to trading, to the scientific innovations of the seventeenth century and a subsequent period of consolidation in the eighteenth century. This is a period of great relevance in history of science and a strong focus of Crosland’s work. The time between 1750 and 1800 saw many movements trying to organise and revolutionise scientific names and units ? the significance of which is often overlooked. Crosland talks here about the development of language in botany, chemistry and the metric system, drawing a connection between the three fields and the development of the sciences in general. |
